The Switch Asia Re-Tie Bangladesh Project, funded by the European Commission, aims to improve and develop the local leather based industry of Bangladesh so that they will have enhanced capabilities in producing exportable leather and leather products fromĀ  locally available raw hide and skins.

Introducing latest technologies and environment friendly cleaner production methods the project is working towards creating a more competent leather industry through activities like

  • advocacy and awareness creation
  • training, both local and international
  • providing expert consultation to sector companies
  • assisting the tanneries with introducing new technologies & equipment
  • providing assistance for relocation of the tanneries to Savar
  • providing assistance for marketing and export of leather products

The outcome of the project will contribute in providing employment and income opportunities for the ever increasing population of Bangladesh without jeopardizing the livelihood of surrounding human settlements through environmental degradation threatening their rapidly depleting water sources and agricultural land.

A major intention of the project is to prepare SMEs from the leather sector to produce ecology-friendly products which are easier to export to Europe and fulfill requirements set by European importers in line with international environmental agreements.
